BIOGRAPHY

Vocalist Doreen Smith sings a story of love as told through the Great American Songbook. Songs of anticipation, unfettered joy and heartbreak presented in true "classic" form in the tradition of Sinatra, O'day and Holiday. Doreen digs in and doesn't let go for a moment. Digs in to the lyric and the melody, and digs in to an unshakable swingin' groove. Hers is a soulful performance, imparting a unique understanding of every note and every word of these songs called "Great" for a reason.

A veteran of the Toronto blues and jazz scene, her musical knowledge and professionalism have led her to play with Juno nominee, Bernie Senensky and rock legend Bo Diddley, to name a few. Doreen has appeared with the Niagara Symphony orchestra as part of the Shaw festival. She has also been featured in the Toronto Blues Society's "Women in Blues" review and appeared in many Canadian Jazz festivals including a week-long engagement at Biddle's (now House of Jazz) during the Montreal Jazz Festival.
In Ottawa, Doreen performs regularly with guitarist/groovemeister Tim Bedner. Together they have appeared at the Brookstreet Hotel, the One-Up Cocktail Pub, Buzz Jazz and the Gigspace Microfest. Doreen was a featured performer in the 2015 house jazz concert series by  JazzN along with Tim, bassist Norman Glaude and Marilee Townsend-Alcorn on drums.  Doreen appeared in the 2015 Merrickville Jazz Festival, at the Baldachin Inn, with Tim Bedner and Tom Denison on bass.
Most recently, Doreen has collaborated with world class guitarist Roddy Ellias at the Lord Elgin hotel and was the featured vocalist with Big Band Ottawa for New Year's Eve 2018 at the newly renovated NAC.
